The voices of Samoa’s next generation will take centrestage this Saturday as young performers from across the Falealili District gather for the annual “Ne’i Galo Lou Aganu’u” Traditional Song & Dance Festival, celebrating the richness and authenticity of Samoan cultural heritage.
The festival will be held at the Poutasi Sports Ground on Saturday, 11 July 2026, from 8:00am to 4:00pm, with free admission for the public.
Now in its third year, the festival has become a unique platform dedicated to preserving traditional Samoan performing arts in their original form. Unlike many modern cultural performances that incorporate recorded music and contemporary musical influences, “Ne’i Galo Lou Aganu’u” challenges young people to return to the foundations of Samoan performance.
Audiences can expect performances accompanied only by traditional sounds– powerful acapella singing, the rhythmic beat of the pātē (wooden drums), wind instruments and other traditional Samoan instruments that have accompanied song and dance for generations.
Festival Director Tuatagaloa Joe Annandale said the event was created to encourage young people to value and protect Samoa’s cultural identity.
“The spirit behind this festival, which began in 2023, is to remind our young people to hold tightly not only to our traditional songs and dances, but also to the values that these cultural expressions carry,” said Tuatagaloa.
“Today it has become common practice to simply play recorded music through a sound system. Many of these songs are heavily influenced by pop, hip hop and other contemporary genres. While there is a place for creativity, we also want our young people to rediscover the beauty of Samoan song and dance in its purest form.”
He said traditional performance is more is a living expression of identity, discipline, respect and community.
Adding to this year’s celebrations is a special guest performance by the McAuley High School Malaga Group from Auckland, New Zealand, winners of the 2025 ASB Polyfest Samoan Stage, who will showcase the high standard of Samoan cultural performance being nurtured among Pacific communities overseas.
The festival also carries a significant prize. The overall winning group will earn the opportunity to travel to Auckland to perform at the 2027 ASB Polyfest, one of the world’s largest celebrations of Pacific performing arts.
Festival committee member Soi Fuimaono Lalovi Lome, a respected traditional Samoan dance practitioner and mentor to young people throughout the Falealili District, believes preserving authenticity requires deliberate effort and ongoing commitment.
“There is still much work to be done, not only to preserve our traditional songs and dances but to refine them to a professional standard,” he said.
“Our Samoan cultural groups in New Zealand deserve recognition for the passion and discipline they have shown in preserving and refining these traditions. They continue to uphold the art of Samoan song and dance with remarkable dedication.”
He expressed concern that young people in Samoa are increasingly at risk of losing the authenticity of traditional performance through growing reliance on modern musical styles and choreographic influences.
“If we lose the authenticity of our traditional songs and dances, we also risk losing the cultural values that are embedded within them. These performances teach respect, humility, discipline and identity. They are an important part of who we are as Samoans.”
Organisers are inviting families, villages and visitors to attend the festival and support the young performers who are helping ensure Samoa’s cultural heritage continues to thrive for generations to come.
