With the Railway Development Master Plan to 2050, Peru now has, for the first time, a comprehensive vision for implementing a modern and competitive railway system, United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Peru, Su-Lin Garbett-Shiels,stated on Friday.
“For the United Kingdom, this master plan is important because the value of railways lies not only in building tracks or stations, but in helping people get to work and back home more quickly, connecting businesses with new markets, including regions that are currently far from economic opportunities, and building a more competitive country,” the diplomat noted.
During the presentation of the Railway Development Master Plan to 2050, Garbett-Shiels emphasized that today’s launch is not the end of the work, but the beginning of a new phase.
“The next task is to turn this vision into concrete projects and reforms that will make their implementation possible. The idea is very simple: before deciding what to build, we must clearly understand the problem we want to solve, analyze the options, assess the risks, and ensure the projects make sense for citizens,” Garbett-Shiels said.
The British ambassador highlighted that the UK has a long railway tradition, marked by landmark projects, but continues to innovate nowadays.
“Through the United Kingdom’s Sustainable Infrastructure Programme, we are working alongside Peru to support three key initiatives: the National Infrastructure Plan, the Lima and Callao Urban Mobility Plan, and now the Railway Development Master Plan to 2050,” she concluded.
