Prime Minister Luis Arroyo stressed on Wednesday that the transitional government helped create a more stable environment in the country, allowing efforts to be focused on fostering development and addressing citizens’ needs.
He made the remarks during the National Agreement Forum’s informational session.
The high-ranking official noted that during the current presidential term, which began on February 18 and is nearing its end, “the strength of Peruvian institutions and the population’s democratic commitment were put to the test.”
He added that in recent years the country had been affected by successive crises, making it difficult to address national priorities, while a persistent climate of political polarization weakened public confidence in democratic institutions.
In this regard, the Cabinet chief welcomed the restoration of an important dialogue forum such as the National Agreement.
Arroyo recalled that President Balcazar assumed office last February with a clear responsibility: to restore stability, institutional certainty, and the conditions necessary for the Peruvian State to resume its normal functioning.
“That will be the main legacy of this stage: having helped provide the country with the political and institutional breathing room it so badly needed after years of uncertainty and polarization,” Arroyo stated.
“This climate of greater stability enabled the country to once again focus its efforts on what truly matters: fostering development, addressing the needs of millions of Peruvians, and ensuring that national objectives define the right path and the vision for the future that we aspire to,” he added.
Arroyo stressed that there are national commitments that must be maintained and strengthened during the administration that will begin on July 28 and be led by President-elect Keiko Fujimori.
Among them, he identified three priorities that transcend any administration: the development of the Amazon, the consolidation of the territorial development-based economic model, and Peru’s accession process to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
The Cabinet chief also expressed his condolences to the families of the 10 people who died in the fire in Lima and underscored the assistance provided to those affected by the recent earthquakes in Chupaca, Junin region.
Among the achievements of the current administration, he highlighted preventive actions against El Niño phenomenon, measures to strengthen public healthcare, and the organization of the general elections, among other initiatives.
“These achievements show that even during a transitional period, it was possible to keep the country on course and continue delivering tangible results for citizens,” Arroyo emphasized.
“Today, as this stage draws to a close, Peru reaches a new democratic transfer of power having fully preserved constitutional order and institutional stability,” he concluded.
