Peru: President Fujimori mourns loss of lives in Nasca aircraft crash

22:17 | Mazamari, Aug. 1.

The President of the Republic, Keiko Fujimori, mourned the loss of lives in the light airplane crash that occurred in Nasca, Ica region, on Saturday.

Likewise, the Head of State said she is awaiting the progress of the investigation.

Speaking to reporters in Mazamari, the top official stated that Transportation and Communications Minister Rafael Rey is handling the matter.

Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Carlos Espa is coordinating with the consulates, as there are foreign nationals among the victims.

“The suspension of the airport’s operations is being evaluated, but I do not want to say anything prematurely until the investigations are concluded and the corresponding ministers submit their reports,” Fujimori pointed out.

The President made these remarks following a working visit to the Valley of Apurimac, Ene, and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM).

During the visit, she toured several military bases involved in the fight against narco-terrorism.

Moreover, the Head of State expressed her support and gratitude to the Armed Forces and Peruvian National Police personnel carrying out that mission.

“We wanted to come here personally to recognize and honor the members of the VRAEM Joint Command who took part in Operation Quiñones, which took down a narco-terrorist,” she emphasized.

On the other hand, the top official noted Peru is interested in joining the Shield of the Americas initiative in order to unite forces against organized crime and drug trafficking, as well as to share information.

The President also said the Armed Forces will be temporarily deployed to help combat organized crime.

“They will be called upon for these two urgent issues, namely restoring order and peace. Furthermore, in the prevention of El Niño phenomenon, we will ask them to stand by our side and that of the population,” she added.

President Fujimori made the working visit to the VRAEM, accompanied by Defense Minister Rafael Belaunde.
