on Thursday called on Peruvians to participate in the League Against Cancer’s 2026 National Fundraising Campaign.
The main fundraising days are August 20 and 21, with funds raised to strengthen cancer prevention and early detection efforts.
Within the framework of this solidarity campaign, the top official received League Against Cancer Chairman Adolfo Dammert at Government Palace in Lima.
They discussed the importance of cancer prevention and early detection.
“Cancer is a silent disease, but if detected early or if prevention efforts are carried out consistently, people can be cured,” Fujimori stated.
“That is why it is so important to support this initiative and this institution, which has been working continuously for 76 years and has received awards and recognition worldwide. Let us all help in any way we can,” she added.
In turn, Dammert underscored that contributions from the public will help expand early detection efforts in various parts of the country.
“It is a major challenge because cancer is the leading cause of death in Peru. Therefore, detecting it early is the best thing we can do. Every contribution, however small, helps us bring early detection services to people across Peru,” he stated.
League Against Cancer
Founded in 1950, the League Against Cancer was the first institution in Peru to promote cancer prevention and early detection efforts.
Its work includes medical care, educational campaigns, community outreach, and social programs, with a particular focus on vulnerable and low-income populations.
The League currently serves around 300,000 people a year and has screening centers and mobile clinics that provide early detection services and preventive education.
It also operates in Iquitos, Piura, Huancayo, Trujillo, Pucallpa, Puno, Tacna, Arequipa, Ica, Cañete, Barranca, Huacho, and Cerro Azul.
According to information from the League Against Cancer, around 73,000 new cases are detected in Peru every year, and approximately 200 people are diagnosed daily.
Additionally, 70% of cases are identified at an advanced stage, while 90% can be successfully treated if detected early.
The National Fundraising Campaign is the institution’s main fundraising initiative. It helps finance free campaigns, community outreach programs, and affordable medical services.
