announced on Friday that S/22 million (about US$6.50 million) will be allocated through the Works for Taxes mechanism to start building homes in the areas affected by the earthquake in Chongos Bajo district, Chupaca province, Junin region.
The Head of State said a technical working group will be established to address the needs of residents affected by the earthquake.
The top official explained that an agreement between Caja Huancayo and the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation, under the Works for Taxes mechanism, will allow S/22 million to be allocated for building homes.
“I commend the private sector, I commend Caja Huancayo, and I hope more companies, through the Works for Taxes program, will come forward so we can continue making progress in this reconstruction effort,” she expressed.
The President also said she had ordered the transfer to Junin of tents, temporary housing units, and other supplies that had been stored in the northwestern city of Trujillo as a precaution against El Niño phenomenon.
Moreover, the Head of State revealed that an organization in Panama has expressed its willingness to help those affected by the earthquake.
“I want all of you, especially the residents who have been affected, to know that aid will continue to arrive and that reconstruction will begin and move forward with the support of the State and all the authorities accompanying me here,” Fujimori stated.
More Cabinet ministers to arrive
The President said the situation is dramatic, adding that there is a great deal of need.
The Head of State noted, for example, that 23 schools and 80 classrooms collapsed following the earthquake, making the presence of the Education Minister and other Cabinet members necessary.
“The Education, Production, and Health ministers will come. I have also instructed the Housing Minister to remain here until tomorrow,” Fujimori pointed out.
The Head of State made these announcements after meeting with Junin Region Governor Zosimo Cardenas, along with provincial and district mayors from the region.
She then continued her tour with a visit to the National Civil Defense Institute (INDECI) warehouse in Chongos Bajo, from where humanitarian aid is channeled to the population.
At the site, she expressed her gratitude to authorities at all government levels, civil society organizations, the Church, volunteer firefighters, and others who joined the emergency response.
“I ask families not to lose hope. Our Government will be there. It may take us a little time, but I guarantee that we will carry out the full reconstruction of your homes,” she stated.
