Peru has completed the internal procedures for the entry into force of the Protocol on the Optimization of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China, following said instrument’s recent ratification, the
reported Wednesday.
Within this framework, Mincetur noted that the measure will strengthen the economic and trade relationship between both countries.
The ratification was made official through Supreme Decree No. 035-2026-RE, published on July 25, 2026.
This completes the internal legal procedures required for its forthcoming entry into force.
The Protocol on the Optimization of the Free Trade Agreement includes the modernization of existing chapters, as well as the addition of new ones.
The issues negotiated as part of the optimization process are intended to facilitate foreign trade operations, strengthen customs cooperation, incorporate provisions on digital economy, and establish a framework to promote greater Chinese investment in Peru.
Mincetur stated that, given that China is an important trading partner, it is necessary to have a modern FTA that meets the needs of economic operators.
The optimization of the FTA updates and strengthens Peru’s economic and trade relationship with China, creating more opportunities to benefit micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and attract greater Chinese investment.
The Protocol on the Optimization of the Free Trade Agreement was signed in Lima on November 14, 2024, during the state visit to Peru by President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping.
The signing took place on the occasion of the APEC Summit, which Peru hosted.
Bilateral trade
China is Peru’s largest trading partner, accounting for 35% of the South American country’s total trade.
In 2025, Peruvian exports to China reached US$10.748 billion.
Non-traditional exports accounted for 4% of the total, expanding 141% compared to 2024.
Last year, Peruvian imports from China reached a record US$17.847 billion, driven by higher purchases of automotive products, steel, chemicals, miscellaneous goods, and IT equipment.
