announced on Friday that the Government of the Republic of Peru and the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela have decided “to start a gradual process toward the full resumption of bilateral relations.”

“In the first stage, both countries have agreed to reactivate consular relations as an initial step toward the full resumption of bilateral relations, with the immediate purpose of ensuring protection and consular services for their respective nationals residing in both sister countries,” the government agency stated.

“This firm commitment to cooperation and integration between our countries is grounded in the historic bonds of friendship and Latin American solidarity that have united Peru and Venezuela since their founding as republics, inspiring their joint efforts to promote the development and well-being of our peoples and the region,” it added.

Last Monday, Foreign Affairs Minister Carlos Pareja told reporters that it is “very important” for the Peruvian Government to resume consular relations with Venezuela because “we have thousands of Peruvians who are left without assistance, as there is no consular representation to support them (in said country).”

Venezuela severed diplomatic relations with Peru in July 2024.
