The National Customs Authority (ANA) reported the seizure of illicit cigarettes valued at approximately $60 million during an operation carried out in a warehouse in the Colón Free Zone (ZLC). In addition, evidence was identified of alleged crimes related to smuggling, possible violations of national and international intellectual property regulations, and signs of product deterioration that could pose a risk to human consumption.
Panamanian authorities have made other massive contraband seizures in recent years, including a historic interdiction of over 140 million illicit cigarettes that were primarily destined for Costa Rica. They also frequently intercept multi-million dollar maritime narcotics shipments, such as a historic 13.5-ton cocaine bust (valued at roughly $200 million) by the National Aeronaval Service (SENAN).
