Iva Mihajlova will be tried in absentia

Following a proposal by the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Kocani, a decision has been issued to try Iva Mihajlov —who is charged with “serious offenses against the safety of people and property in traffic”—in absentia, as she is not accessible to state authorities, the Public Prosecutor’s Office reported. The next court hearing is scheduled for November 9, 2026, at 9:00 AM.

Earlier this month, Iva Mihajlova, accompanied by her Bulgarian lawyer, left the country illegally and is currently in Bulgaria. She holds dual citizenship—Macedonian and Bulgarian—and Bulgarian authorities have indicated that they will not extradite her to Macedonia, despite an arrest warrant having been issued against her. Last year, Mihailova was involved in a fatal traffic accident on the Kocani–Stip expressway, for which she is currently standing trial at the court in Kocani.
