11 nations issue first-ever joint alert on North Korean IT worker schemes

The 11 member states of a multilateral initiative monitoring DPRK sanctions evasion issued a joint alert for the first time on Friday about North Korean information technology (IT) workers’ illicit revenue generation activities.

The advisory — issued by the U.S., Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand and the U.K. — highlighted Pyongyang’s continued reliance on a global network of skilled IT workers who obtain remote jobs under false identities to help fund Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.
