The UN Mission Has Shifted from Leading the Path to a Solution to Managing and Prolonging the Crisis

Libya – Fathi Al-Shibli, head of the Sawt Al-Shaab Party, criticized the performance of the U.N. mission in Libya in recent years. He said the mission has shifted from leading the peace process to simply managing the crisis and prolonging it.

In an interview with Erem News, Al-Shibli said new envoys and initiatives have come and gone for over a decade. However, he noted the outcome remains the same: more talks, meetings, and roadmaps without a final settlement to end the division.

Al-Shibli argued the approach seems aimed at keeping the crisis under control, rather than resolving it. He said this has wasted time and allowed rival parties to adapt to the ongoing split and entrench their interests.

He concluded that many Libyans now believe the U.N. mission has managed the crisis, but failed to produce a real solution. He added that the prolonging of the transitional period has become an unspoken priority, overshadowing the need for a stable country with unified, democratically elected institutions.
