Egyptian media reports that Egypt has increased its electricity export capacity to Libya by approximately 43%—reaching 100 megawatts—to support the Libyan power grid following a major collapse earlier in July, according to an Egyptian government official.

The official stated that Egypt and Libya have agreed to reduce the late-payment penalties on Libya’s outstanding dues to Egypt—totalling around $90 million. This move aims to accelerate the settlement of financial obligations and strengthen cooperation between the two nations in the electricity sector.

Egyptian media says the agreement follows a meeting between Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Libya’s Tripoli based Libyan government, Abdel Hamid Aldabaiba, in New Alamein City on the Mediterranean coast.

Egypt had previously resumed electricity exports to Libya after the Libyan grid suffered a widespread collapse earlier this month after a loss of 1,350 MW of generation.

It follows the Libyan government paying US$ 100 million of debts accumulated since 2023 in return for importing 70 MW from Egypt.
