EMPTY ROYAL CHAIRS STIR ANTICIPATION AT QUEEN ‘MASENATE’S BIRTHDAY MASS

MASERU, June 2 — Long before the arrival of Their Majesties, all eyes at the historic Mofumahali oa Tlholo Roman Catholic Church were drawn to a set of empty chairs reserved for the royal family.

Positioned prominently at the front of the church, the vacant seats seemed to carry a presence of their own as government officials, church leaders, members of the diplomatic corps and ordinary Basotho patiently awaited the arrival of King and Queen.

The atmosphere was one of quiet anticipation, reverence and celebration as the congregation gathered for a Holy Mass marking the 50th birthday of Her Majesty Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso.

Outside and inside the church, the occasion was painted in the vibrant colours of Basotho culture. Men and women arrived draped in beautifully patterned ‘Seshoeshoe’ dresses and traditional Basotho blankets, creating a colourful tapestry that reflected both national pride and affection for the Queen.

The rich blues, browns, reds and greens of the garments stood out against the crisp winter afternoon transforming the church grounds into a living exhibition of Basotho heritage.

As the church bells echoed through the air, conversations flowed softly among those gathered. Government officials occupied their seats while members of the congregation glanced periodically towards the entrance, waiting for the moment Their Majesties would arrive.

For many, the service is not merely about marking a birthday but celebrating a woman who has spent years championing the welfare of vulnerable groups, particularly women and children.

Born Karabo Mots’oeneng on June 2, 1976, Her Majesty’s journey from a young Mosotho woman to Queen Consort has remained a source of inspiration for many Basotho. Over the years, she has become synonymous with compassion, grace and dedication to community development.

As sunlight filtered gently through the church windows, illuminating the altar and the empty royal chairs, the symbolism was difficult to miss. The chairs stood as a reminder that while royalty may command respect, it is the bond between the monarchs and their people that truly fills a room.

The congregation continued to wait patiently, their excitement growing with each passing moment. Soon, the empty chairs would no longer be empty.

And when Her Majesty finally took her seat, it would mark not only the celebration of a 50th birthday but also a golden milestone in the life of a Queen whose story has become intertwined with that of the nation she serves.
