Colombian superstar Shakira drew an estimated two million fans to Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro for a massive free concert, which city officials described as the largest audience of her career.
The performance took place on Saturday as part of the “Todo Mundo no Rio” festival, turning the iconic waterfront into a sea of fans who traveled from across Brazil and abroad to attend the show.
According to the Associated Press, Shakira spoke to the crowd in Portuguese, reflecting on her early visits to Brazil and her long connection with the country. She told fans: “I came here when I was eighteen years old, dreaming of singing for you, and now look at this. Life is magical.”
The concert featured appearances by several Brazilian artists, while the opening included a spectacular drone show involving around 1,500 drones lighting up the Rio skyline.
City officials estimated the event generated approximately $161 million for the local economy, boosting hotels, restaurants, and tourism-related businesses across Rio de Janeiro.
Large-scale concerts at Copacabana Beach have become a signature attraction for the city, with global stars such as Madonna and Lady Gaga previously drawing similarly massive crowds.
The Rio performance is part of Shakira’s global “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” tour. Earlier this year, she performed a free concert for around 400,000 fans in Mexico City’s Zócalo Square.
She is now set to continue her tour in the United States this summer, beginning with a series of indoor shows in California in June.
