Kuwait’s holdings of U.S. Treasuries hit record $67.6 billion in April

Kuwait’s holdings of U.S. Treasury securities rose to a record high at the end of April, driven by steady increases over the past year and marking the second consecutive monthly gain, according to data released by the U.S. Treasury Department.

Kuwait held $67.56 billion in U.S. Treasury securities at the end of April 2026, up 24.6% from $54.22 billion a year earlier, an increase of $13.34 billion.

On a monthly basis, Kuwait’s holdings rose by 1.58%, or $1.05 billion, from $66.51 billion at the end of March, extending gains recorded earlier in the year.
Since the beginning of 2026, Kuwait’s investments in U.S. government debt have increased by 2.29%, equivalent to $1.51 billion, from $66.05 billion at the end of December 2025.

The Treasury data showed that the bulk of Kuwait’s holdings consisted of long-term securities, which totaled $64.74 billion, while short-term Treasury securities accounted for $2.82 billion.

The increase underscores Kuwait’s continued preference for U.S. government debt as a key component of its foreign reserve and investment strategy, amid ongoing global market uncertainty and fluctuating interest rate expectations.

Among Arab countries, Saudi Arabia remained the largest holder of U.S. Treasury securities, with holdings totaling $140.1 billion at the end of April. The United Arab Emirates ranked second with $112.5 billion in holdings, reports Al-Anba daily.

The United States Treasury market is widely regarded as one of the world’s safest and most liquid investment destinations, attracting significant allocations from sovereign wealth funds, central banks and government investment institutions across the Gulf region.

Kuwait’s latest holdings represent the highest level on record, according to the Treasury Department’s monthly data.
