The Argentine captain recovered from an early penalty miss to guide the world champions to a hard-fought win and maintain their perfect start to the tournament.

Austria proved stubborn opponents and remained in the contest until the closing moments, but struggled to create clear chances against a disciplined Argentine defence.

Marcel Sabitzer’s free-kick, saved by Emiliano Martínez, was their only shot on target, while Patrick Wimmer went closest to an equaliser with a late header that drifted wide.
