Vaz: Defamation suit was about clearing my name

Cabinet Minister Daryl Vaz says his defamation lawsuit against PNP General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell was never about financial compensation, but about clearing his name after years of what he describes as damaging allegations.

The matter has now been settled, with Dr. Campbell publicly apologized to Minister Vaz and paying $1.5 million in legal costs.

Speaking following the settlement, Vaz says the apology brings closure to an issue that has hung over his political career for decades.

The voluntary out-of-court settlement was signed on Wednesday.

It closes the matter that began in 2023, after Dr. Campbell made comments about Minister Vaz on a political platform in North Western Clarendon.

Dr. Campbell posted his apology to his social media platforms.

The apology is also to be published in the Gleaner and Observer newspapers this coming Sunday.

Vaz adds that it’s poetic justice that vindication has come from the General Secretary of the PNP.
