In Trinidad and Tobago, Opposition Leader, Pennelope Beckles, has condemned Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s Independence Day message.

Bissessar made two addresses to mark the twin-island republic’s 64th independence.

She first addressed the United National Congress, saying the leadership of the party must never fall into the hands of weak men and women.

In her later national address, Bissessar told Trinidadians to stop blaming their problems on their colonial past and accept responsibility for the decisions made during the 64 years since independence.

But in a stinging statement posted to Facebook on Monday, the Opposition PNM Leader rejected those comments.

According to Beckles, Prime Minister Bissessar was attempting to rewrite the history of the nation.

She says a Prime Minister who cannot speak honestly about our history cannot credibly lead the nation forward.
