The father of the 10-year-old girl found with her throat slashed in Troy district in South Trelawny on Tuesday afternoon, says the main suspect was a notorious pervert who benefitted from constant protection by his father.

Aston Coke says his daughter, Shanai, affectionately called Kaidra, was on her way to a nearby shop when she was abducted.

Little Shanai was a student of Troy Primary School.

Her partially nude body was found on a dirt track in the community around 3:30PM on Tuesday. Her throat had been slashed.

Two men, a father and his son, were taken into custody in relation to the gruesome incident.

The son, who was the main suspect, died after reportedly suffering severe injuries after members of a mob used machetes to chop him repeatedly.

He has since been identified as Delroy Coke, the child’s cousin.

According to Shanai’s father, Delroy has had numerous run-ins with the law and was consistently shielded by his father.

He says Shanai was abducted after being sent to a nearby shop by her grandmother.

Aston says his daughter’s killing represents what he says has a been a worrying trend in Troy.

And Shanai’s aunt, Shawna Williams-Stevens, says her death has traumatised the entire family.

Meanwhile, the education ministry is expressing condolences to the family of little Shanai. The parliamentary secretary in the ministry is Senator Marlon Morgan.

Senator Morgan says a team will be deployed to offer psychosocial support to the school community.

Meanwhile, Senator Morgan is discouraging citizens from exercising jungle justice.

He urges citizens to develop a culture of reporting suspicious activities against children.
