Education Minister, Senator Dr. Dana Morris-Dixon, says new building standards for schools should result in less damage to institutions of learning in the event of a natural disaster.

The minister was speaking at Wednesday’s post-cabinet media briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister.

The 2026 hurricane season began on June 1.

It ends on November 30.

Jamaica experienced two hurricanes in the past two years.

The first was category 4 Hurricane Beryl in 2024 and category 5 Melissa in October last year.

Melissa left a path of devastation in western parishes.

This included over 400 schools.

Minister Morris-Dixon says some of those schools are still under repair, eight months after the system.
