Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) successfully foiled on Sunday an attack by ISIS terrorists on a military position in the Tuz Khurmatu region in the eastern province of Salah al-Din.
The raid targeted an isolated outpost belonging to the Commando Regiment of the PMF’s 63rd Brigade.
ISIS militants launched an armed attack from a mountain, resulting in an intense battle, with loud gunfire and explosions reported by civilians.
The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) represent a coalition of Shia paramilitary groups that have been officially incorporated into Iraq’s national security forces. This coalition consists of various militias that have ties with Iran.
PMF fighters engaged the attackers immediately, compelling them to retreat into the challenging terrain without accomplishing any tactical objectives. No casualties have been reported among PMF personnel.
Iraqi Army and PMF soldiers started a coordinated, large-scale search operation in a nearby mountainous area to track down fleeing terrorists and identify their locations.
This failed attack highlights the ongoing threat of secret factions belonging to the ISIS group in isolated places.
Analysts see that these small-scale, opportunistic ambushes are intended to test local defense networks as Baghdad moves to autonomous state security ahead of the scheduled withdrawal of international coalition forces.
