Basra (IraqiNews.com) — Iraq has received a fleet of Chinese-built passenger boats and ferries to be deployed on new maritime routes connecting the country to Arab Gulf states, as part of Baghdad’s efforts to modernize its transportation network and strengthen regional connectivity.

According to Iraq’s Ministry of Transport, the fleet consists of 15 tourist boats, two passenger ferries capable of transporting 200 people each, and a bigger multi-purpose ferry that can transport 500 passengers and 80 vehicles every journey.

The warships will run maritime routes between Iraq and Arab Gulf nations, simplifying passenger travel while promoting commerce and tourism, according to the government.

The acquisition is part of Iraq’s overall strategy to modernize its maritime transport infrastructure and diversify its economy by expanding regional transportation links beyond its road and air networks.

According to the ministry, the new fleet would boost passenger and vehicle capacity while offering safer and more effective transportation services as regional travel demand increases.

The investment comes after Iraq announced several transportation projects, including the near completion of a new marina on the Shatt al-Arab waterway and continued development of the Grand Faw Port, as Baghdad seeks to strengthen its position as a regional transportation and logistics hub.
