Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein confirmed on Sunday that Iraq would not allow its territory or airspace to be used for launching attacks against Saudi Arabia or Gulf countries.
According to a statement released by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, Hussein’s remarks took place during his meeting in Riyadh with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan.
The meeting underlined the significance of national sovereignty, good neighbor relations, non-interference in internal matters, and refusal to use a country’s territory to harm the security and stability of another.
Hussein highlighted the need to increase economic and investment cooperation, build energy partnerships, and intensify political and security coordination between the two nations.
The increased coordination between the two countries would help to strengthen regional stability and provide the conditions for further collaboration that benefits the region’s peoples, according to Hussein.
Hussein is accompanied by Iraq’s national security advisor, the director of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service (INIS), and a high-level diplomatic delegation.
In mid-May, Iraq launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attempted attack on neighboring Saudi Arabia using three drones. The Iraqi Foreign Ministry also urged Saudi Arabia to disclose information on the attempted strike.
The development took place after Riyadh announced that it intercepted three drones launched from Iraqi airspace and affirmed its right to respond at any time and location.
The incident was not the first attempt to target Saudi territory with missiles or drones launched from Iraq since the outbreak of the war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran on February 28.
Iraqi authorities have repeatedly affirmed their commitment to avoiding involvement in the conflict in the region. They have also emphasized that they will not allow attacks on neighboring countries to be launched from Iraqi territory.
