Al-Zaidi arrives in Washington for talks with Trump

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falih Al-Zaidi arrived in Washington on Monday for his first official foreign visit since taking office, leading a high level government delegation for meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump, senior administration officials, and American business leaders.

The visit, held at President Trump’s invitation, underscores Baghdad’s effort to strengthen ties with Washington while placing greater emphasis on economic cooperation, investment, and energy development. It also comes as Iraq pushes forward with plans to modernize its infrastructure and attract foreign capital to support long term growth.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, discussions will focus on expanding the role of U.S. companies in major infrastructure projects and increasing cooperation in the oil, gas, and energy sectors. The agenda also includes boosting domestic refining capacity, developing petrochemical industries, and supporting productive sectors aimed at broadening Iraq’s economic base.

Al-Zaidi is expected to present a series of initiatives designed to deepen economic cooperation and encourage greater private sector participation in Iraq’s development plans. Meetings with American business executives are expected to highlight investment opportunities across infrastructure, energy, and industrial projects.

The visit reflects a broader effort by Baghdad to strengthen its economic partnerships while maintaining its long standing strategic relationship with the United States. Iraqi officials have increasingly emphasized economic development as a central pillar of bilateral relations, alongside continued cooperation on regional stability and security.

As Al-Zaidi’s first overseas mission as prime minister, the Washington meetings are expected to set the tone for his government’s foreign policy and economic agenda, with both sides looking to expand cooperation in areas that deliver tangible benefits for Iraq’s economy and long term development.
