Uttarakhand to Conduct Mobile Emergency Alert Test on May 2; Public Advised Not to Panic

If your mobile phone suddenly rings on its own tomorrow—Saturday, May 2nd—do not panic. This is because a test alert will be issued on Saturday via the Cell Broadcasting System. The objective of this test is to assess the functionality of the emergency information dissemination system established within the state. Furthermore, it aims to ensure that warning messages can be disseminated in a timely and widespread manner during disaster situations.

The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority urges citizens to treat this test alert strictly as a test. There is no need for anyone to panic regarding this alert. Vinod Kumar Suman, Secretary of Disaster Management and Rehabilitation, stated that the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (Dehradun)—in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority—is making continuous efforts to enhance the state’s pre-disaster warning system.

Addressing Deficiencies

The primary objective of this initiative is to disseminate weather forecasts and disaster-related information to the general public in a timely and effective manner, thereby enabling people to be alerted in advance regarding potential disasters and helping to minimize the loss of life and property. This test will be conducted across areas covered by all mobile network service providers to assess the effectiveness of alert message dissemination and to identify specific areas requiring improvement.

Additionally, the speed and accuracy of message delivery under various circumstances will also be tested. The overarching goal of this entire process is to ensure that, in the event of any future disaster, the state’s citizens are alerted in time to take necessary precautions. Furthermore, this system will facilitate better coordination between the administration and the general public during emergency situations.

The Department of Disaster Management has stated that, in the future, actual alerts will be issued whenever there is a potential threat of any type of disaster. Such alerts must be taken seriously, and strict compliance with the guidelines issued by the administration will be mandatory. Adhering to these measures will ensure that timely warnings are received prior to a disaster, thereby enabling individuals to safeguard themselves, their families, and their acquaintances.

The Department of Disaster Management further informed that, going forward, awareness programs regarding this system will be conducted periodically to educate the public. This initiative will prove to be a significant step towards making the state more vigilant, secure, and capable in the face of disasters.

On Saturday—May 2nd—the launch of a Cell Broadcast service for rapid disaster alerts to citizens is being initiated via mobile phones, utilizing indigenous technology developed by India. Vigilant Citizens, Secure Nation. Upon receiving this message, the public is not expected to take any action whatsoever. This is a test message. Such messages will be received on your mobile phone from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
