US Senate Democrats Block $1.15 Trillion Defense Bill Over Iran War Concerns

US President Donald Trump is facing mounting pressure at home over the Iran war. Opposition Democratic Party lawmakers on Tuesday blocked the $1.15 trillion annual defense policy bill in the Senate, expressing dismay over the Iran war.

Democrats objected to the war and sending US troops to the war zone without Congressional approval.

New York Senator and Democratic leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, said, “Trump started this war without authorization, without a strategy, and without a plan for exit.”

In his address to the Senate, he announced that he would vote against it. The annual defense bill, the National Defense Authorization Act, failed to pass the House. Although the bill received a majority of votes (50-46) in favor, it fell short of the 60 votes needed to advance in the 100-member Senate.

All House Democrats voted along party lines, while all members of Trump’s Republican Party voted in favor except for John Thune, a Republican senator from South Dakota. Thune voted against the bill.
