Tripura High Court orders FIR, Crime Branch probe into 2.78 kg gold seizure allegations

Agartala: The Tripura High Court has directed the state police to register a case and ordered a senior Crime Branch officer to investigate allegations that personnel from Bishalgarh police station took 2.780 kg of gold from a passenger during a vehicle interception.

The case stems from an alleged incident on February 21 involving Billal Mia, a resident of Madhyapara in Melaghar. According to his petition, Mia was travelling towards Agartala with 2.780 kg of gold when his vehicle was stopped by personnel from Bishalgarh police station.

Mia has alleged that the police personnel took possession of the gold he was carrying. He subsequently approached Sonamura police station seeking registration of a case, but his complaint was allegedly not accepted.

With no case registered, Mia moved the Tripura High Court on March 18 through a writ petition, seeking legal action and relief over the alleged incident.

After hearing the matter, a Division Bench directed the state police to register a case at the earliest, petitioner’s lawyer Shankar Lodh said.

The court also ordered that the investigation be handled by a senior officer of the Crime Branch.

The allegations against the Bishalgarh police personnel have not been established. The court’s direction to register a case and conduct an investigation does not amount to a finding that the gold was taken or that any police officer was involved.

The Crime Branch probe is expected to establish what happened during the alleged interception, including whether the gold was taken or recovered and whether any individuals were involved.

There was no immediate response from the police to the allegations.
