The charges carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The FSB alleged that the journalist collected and stored information about Russia’s defence capabilities for transfer to Japanese intelligence. He was subsequently transferred to Moscow, where a court ordered his pre-trial detention.Zakharova criticised Tokyo, saying the use of foreign correspondents to gather information that could undermine Russian security was regrettable. She warned that the arrest would further strain relations between the two countries.Japan’s embassy in Moscow said the government was seeking to establish the circumstances of the journalist’s reported detention. His newspaper, Hokkaido Shimbun, was also verifying the details.Sakhalin Island lies in Russia’s Far East, north of Japan’s Hokkaido island and west of the Kuril Islands, a chain extending towards Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. The region provides access to key maritime routes and the Sea of Okhotsk, which is important to Russia’s Pacific naval operationsRussia-Japan ties strained over Ukraine war and territorial disputeRussia and Japan have seen relations deteriorate since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.Tokyo joined Western sanctions against Russia, prompting Moscow to designate Japan as an “unfriendly” country. Russia has repeatedly criticised Japan’s support for Kyiv and its alignment with Western security policies. The two countries also remain locked in a territorial dispute over four islands in the Kuril chain, controlled by Russia but claimed by Japan as the Northern Territories. The dispute dates back to the final days of the Second World War and has prevented the signing of a formal peace treaty between the two countries. The islands hold strategic importance because of their location between the Sea of Okhotsk and the North Pacific, giving Russia a crucial position in the region.Tensions intensified in August when Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Iturup, one of the disputed islands, prompting protests from Tokyo.
