More than 150 pipes, which were to be used to lay underground water pipelines, were gutted after a fire broke out along Sholinghur–Tiruttani Highway on Tuesday.

The police said that it was around 5 a.m when a few residents noticed thick smoke coming from the stretch. They tried to douse the fire, but it had already spread to the entire set of pipes.

They alerted Sholinghur firefighters who doused the fire at the spot.

However, the entire set of pipes, which had an estimated worth of around ₹10 lakh, was completely gutted.

A case was registered and probe into the cause of the fire is under way.
