Residents of Bengaluru who have witnessed hot and humid weather for the last couple of weeks woke up to a rainy Sunday morning.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) data the city received widespread overnight rainfall with the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) weather station and HAL Airport station recording 94.2 mm and 66 mm rainfall respectively for a 24-hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on Sunday (September 20, 2026). Bengaluru city recorded 15.9 mm rainfall.
The rainfall also brought down the temperature by a few degrees Celsius. It had been hovering above 30°C for the last couple of weeks.
The maximum temperature in Bengaluru city station dropped to 28.3°C on Sunday compared to 31.2°C the previous day.
The heavy downpour at KIA resulted in one international flight being diverted to Chennai and one domestic flight was delayed by 30 minutes.
“The rest of the operations continued as usual,” airport officials said.
IMD said that there is a low-pressure area over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining areas which has moved west-northwestwards and is located over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining East-Central Bay of Bengal.
It said that the associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level.
“The system is likely to move west-northwestwards and gradually intensify, becoming a depression over the East-Central Bay of Bengal on September 21 and a deep depression over the West-Central Bay of Bengal on September 22.
It is likely to continue moving west-northwestwards and reach the West-Central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal, close to the South Odisha–North Andhra Pradesh coast, by the morning of September 23,” IMD said.
IMD officials said under the influence of this weather systemt there would be widespread rainfall across all districts of Karnataka till September 24.
Yellow Alert
“All districts in south interior, north interior and coastal Karnataka will receive widespread rainfall till September 24. Bidar, Kalburgi, Yadgir, Vijayapur, Belagavi, Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag, Shivamogga, Chikkamangaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Bengaluru, Kolar, Chikkaballpur and Bengaluru South districts will receive heavy rainfall and yellow alert has been declared,” said IMD Scientist C.S. Patil.
The forecast for Bengaluru for the next 24 hours states that there would generally be cloudy skies, light to moderate rain/thundershowers accompanied with gusty wind at speeds of 30-40 Kmph. The maximum and minimum temperature are very likely to be around 32°C and 20°C respectively.
