AMA symposium highlights diabetes, obesity treatment | Prayagraj News

Prayagraj: Regular exercise, a balanced diet and early medical intervention can effectively prevent and control obesity and Type-2 diabetes, experts said at a scientific symposium on ‘Diabetes and Obesity’ organised by the Allahabad Medical Association (AMA) on Sunday.Addressing the symposium, Dr Subodh Jain said that obesity and diabetes can be managed by improving the functioning of two key hormones in the body—GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) and GIP (Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide). He explained that these hormones signal the brain that the stomach is full, reducing frequent hunger and the urge to overeat. “This helps lower calorie intake, promotes weight loss and improves blood sugar control,” he said. However, Dr Jain cautioned that neglecting obesity and diabetes at an early stage could lead to several serious health complications. Prof Kamalakar Tripathi highlighted the role of a once-a-week injectable therapy for the treatment of Type-2 diabetes and obesity. He said the medication suppresses appetite, delays stomach emptying and helps patients achieve better weight reduction and blood sugar control. He also stressed the need to encourage children to adopt regular physical exercise from an early age to reduce the risk of lifestyle diseases in the future.Speaking on the safety aspects of treatment, Dr Dharmendra Tiwari outlined possible side effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and other gastrointestinal problems, and advised that such therapies should only be taken under medical supervision.
