One of the many pits-Jal Tara-which are made by inmates of Naini Central Jail to conserve rainwater Prayagraj: Naini Central Jail has launched a rainwater harvesting initiative by constructing Jal tara—traditional groundwater recharge pits—within its premises.What makes the project, which is the brainchild of the senior jail superintendent Vijay Vikram Singh, distinctive is that the structures are built entirely by inmates, making it the first such initiative inside the prison.The jail administration has started constructing several Jaltaras at strategic locations, including near the prison campus and gaushalas, to ensure that rainwater is channelled underground instead of being wasted as surface runoff. The initiative aims to improve groundwater levels and address the growing challenge of water scarcity.“During rain, there are several spots within the jail premises where rainwater gets collected, thus we thought of why not follow the traditional method to use the same water and recharge the underground water,” said Singh. While five of such pits are ready, many more are in the process of getting completed, he added.According to officials, each recharge pit is ten feet deep and of the same size in width. The structures are enclosed with strong brick lining, while the base is left unpaved to facilitate natural infiltration. The pits are filled with layers of sand, stones and broken bricks, enabling rainwater to filter through and replenish the groundwater table. The system functions as a natural recharge mechanism while reducing rainwater wastage.Apart from its environmental significance, the initiative is also intended to engage prisoners in meaningful and socially beneficial work. It also mentions the slogans for conserving water. Officials believe the initiative could serve as a model for other correctional institutions, demonstrating how prisons can contribute to sustainable environmental practices while simultaneously encouraging inmates to participate in constructive community-oriented activities.
