László Koppány won the silver medal in Greco-Roman wrestling in the 130-kilogram weight class at the Under-20 World Championships in Bratislava.
According to the Hungarian Wrestling Federation, the heavyweight from the Ferencváros club—who had already won bronze medals at the U23 World Championships and this year’s U20 European Championships—confidently defeated his Chinese (6–2), Kazakh (8–0, technical victory), Georgian (6–2), and Egyptian (5–1) opponents, advancing to the final, where he lost 8–0 (technical victory) to Ali Ilyasov, the defending Russian world and European champion.
Zalán Toplak, who also competes for Ferencváros, took third place in the 77-kilogram class after entering the repechage with one win and one loss; there, he narrowly defeated his American rival, but in the bronze-medal match, he decisively beat the Georgian U17 European champion Giorgi Gogelashvili 10–2 with outstanding four-point scores. In doing so, he secured the first medal of his career at a World Championship.
On Tuesday, Petro Zsitovoz defeated Egyptian U23 world champion Mohamed Abdelrehim 11–3 in the placement match after initially trailing by three points. With this victory, he also won a bronze medal in Greco-Roman wrestling in the 67-kilogram weight class. The Hungarian wrestler finished Monday with two wins and one loss.
The World Championships began with the Greco-Roman style bouts; eight athletes from the 22-member Hungarian delegation are competing in this discipline.
