On Monday, several members of the Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP) criticized the fact that, contrary to standard practice, parliament is not in session and there are no bills pending for debate.
Bence Rétvári wrote on his Facebook page: There is no parliamentary session, even though Prime Minister Péter Magyar said that a flood of legislation was to be expected and that parliament would be bombarded with a constant stream of new proposals.
Never in living memory has there been a parliamentary recess ordered after a government took office, with nothing happening for a whole week,”
Rétvári complained. At the start of its term in 2010, the Fidesz-KDNP coalition submitted seventeen motions to parliament, which were also debated. Now, however, there are only closed-door meetings and no more parliamentary sessions, the politician said in a video recorded in front of the closed chamber.
Csaba Latorcai wrote on his Facebook page that, aside from tourists, only Fidesz and KDNP politicians were present in the Parliament building, since TISZA did not believe that laws needed to be passed in light of the “major systemic change.” Currently, parliament is “on hold” despite claims that the government is “running at full speed;”
the government is not governing, but rather “posting on Facebook,”
according to the acting KDNP vice president, who believes that every Hungarian deserved better.
In his video, Lőrinc Nacsa also pointed out that this would have been the first regular working week. He recalled that in 2010, far-reaching motions had already been submitted just three days after the constituent session, including the draft law on dual citizenship. The MP expressed hope that parliamentary work would indeed begin next week.
At a press conference following Monday’s cabinet meeting, Péter Magyar stated in response to a question that parliament was “expected” to convene after Pentecost, next Tuesday. A telling sign of the TISZA MPs’ lack of preparation is the fact that the prime minister was unable to provide information on the duration of the parliamentary session or present the draft bills.
Even the TISZA faction does not yet know the details,”
admitted the head of government, who prefers to indulge his passion for social media.
