The Government of Grenada, on 10 September 2026, celebrated the official handing over of the reconstructed St Dominic’s RC School Block #5.
This modern, climate-resilient facility was designed to enhance the learning experience of students while strengthening the school’s capacity to serve as a designated emergency shelter for the wider community.
Funded by the Caribbean Development Bank and executed through the Basic Needs Trust Fund Programme, the project was completed by H Lewis Construction Limited at a cost of EC$1,435,959.56. Construction commenced on 3 June 2024 and was completed on 28 August 2026.
The reconstructed Block #5 features:
- 4 modern classrooms
- Staff office facilities
- Washroom facilities
- New electrical and plumbing systems
- Fire detection and alarm systems
- Telecommunications infrastructure
- Improved drainage and site works
- Reinforced concrete walkways
- Other supporting external works
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Solomon Isaac, Vice President of Operations at the Caribbean Development Bank, highlighted the importance of continued investment in educational infrastructure as a key pillar of national development and community empowerment. “The Caribbean Development Bank is pleased to have partnered in the reconstruction of St Dominic’s RC School Block #5, a project that supports quality education, climate resilience, and community development. We are proud to contribute to the creation of safe and modern learning environments for Grenada’s children and look forward to continuing our support for educational and social development programmes that enhance the well-being and opportunities of communities throughout the country.”
In addition to improving the educational experience for students and teachers, the new facility strengthens the school’s capacity to function as an emergency shelter, providing added security and support for residents of St David during times of disaster or national emergency.
Also speaking at the ceremony, Honourable Dickon Mitchell, Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for St David, emphasised the transformative impact of education and the importance of investing in the nation’s future. “This new facility sends a clear message to our young people: we believe in you, and that is why we invest in you. Education is one of the most important investments we as a Government can make for our nation. When we invest in our children’s education, we invest in Grenada’s future, our workforce, our communities, and our continued development.”
He also emphasised that every child deserves a safe, modern, and comfortable place to learn, grow, and pursue their dreams. “With the completion of this reconstructed block, our students now have an environment that supports quality education, encourages academic success, and allows them to reach their full potential. As a climate-resilient structure and designated emergency shelter, it will also provide a place of safety and support for members of the community during times of need. It is an investment in both education and resilience.”
The Government of Grenada extends sincere gratitude to the Caribbean Development Bank through the Basic Needs Trust Fund Programme, the Roman Catholic Church, the school administration, the contractor, and all stakeholders whose contributions made this achievement possible.
The completion of Block #5 represents another important step in the ongoing development of St David, reflecting continued investment in educational infrastructure that improves learning outcomes, strengthens communities, and creates opportunities for future generations.
As students enter their new classrooms, the reconstructed facility stands as a symbol of progress, resilience, partnership, and a shared commitment to investing in Grenada’s most valuable resource: its people.
