The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has successfully concluded its 2026 Summer School Outreach initiative, marking its largest outreach programme focused on engaging children across Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

During the month of July, the PURC team visited 40 summer schools across all parishes, including Carriacou and Petite Martinique, reaching 1,679 students and 172 facilitators through interactive presentations and quizzes on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and water and electricity conservation.

The outreach programme was designed to increase children’s awareness of sustainable energy practices and responsible utility use. Students participated enthusiastically as they explored the various types of renewable energy, practical ways to conserve electricity, and the importance of protecting water resources. Facilitators also expressed appreciation for the presentations and welcomed the opportunity to learn more about the PURC’s role and responsibilities. Both students and facilitators were informed that the commission serves as the independent regulator of electricity and water utility services and assists consumers to address unresolved complaints with utility providers, including Grenlec and Nawasa.

The outreach was led by Allecia Andrew, Consumer and Public Affairs Officer, with support from Raheem Smith, Public Relations Assistant. This year, the PURC also collaborated with the Geothermal Unit within the Ministry of Climate Resilience, the Environment and Renewable Energy. Wendy Frederick, Social and Community Development Specialist and project lead, contributed presentations on geothermal exploration in Grenada. “This year, we were pleased to have greater interaction with children across the state of Grenada. Their enthusiasm and curiosity reaffirm the importance of educating our young people about responsible utility use, renewable energy, and sustainability from an early age,” remarked Andrew.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission extends sincere thanks to the summer school coordinators, facilitators, students, and partners who supported the initiative. The commission remains committed to strengthening public education and empowering young people with the knowledge needed to become responsible consumers and future champions of renewable energy and sustainability.
