A road accident with an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) on the island of Corfu on Tuesday, left a 42-year-old British tourist dead and his 15-year-old injured in the hospital.
According to media information, father and son were riding an ATV vehicle on the provincial road Sideri-Kassiopi in the North of the island in the Ionian Sea.
At some point, the vehicle veered off the road for some reason and fell into a kind of ditch.
Firefighters and ambulances rushed to the scene.
The father must have been killed on the spot, as ambulance rescuers and later doctors in the hospital tried to revive him, however, without success.
The boy was recovered with injuries where he remains hospitalized.
The family was reportedly from UK.
Every summer it is mostly tourists who get severely or even fatally injured by using all-terrain vehicles in rent on the Greek islands.
This year, on the occasion of the e-scooters involved in accidents, the Greek government has announced to take measures also for the use of ATVs. So far, nothing has happened.
I can recall that they tried also in the past, however, they were met with the objections of the local businesses that flourish in summer.
Somehow the issue disappeared from the Greek media and I cannot find out whether safety measures like the use of helmet, driver’s lenience for heavy motorbikes became a must.
