McKinstry Earns New Deal as Gambia Extends Scorpions Coach’s Contract Until 2028 –

By: Madi Senghore

The Government of The Gambia, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has officially extended the contract of Scorpions head coach Jonathan McKinstry for an additional two years, keeping him in charge of the national team until 2028.

The new agreement, which took effect on June 1, 2026, reflects the confidence placed in the Northern Irish tactician as he continues to lead The Gambia’s senior national team through a crucial period of development and international competition.

McKinstry’s contract extension comes after more than two years at the helm of the Scorpions, having been appointed in January 2024 following the departure of long-serving coach Tom Saintfiet.

Since taking charge, McKinstry has overseen 20 international matches, recording seven wins, five draws, and eight defeats. While results have been mixed, both the Football Federation and government authorities have acknowledged the progress made under his leadership, particularly in maintaining The Gambia’s competitiveness on the continental stage while integrating a new generation of players into the national team setup.

The extension represents a strong vote of confidence in McKinstry’s long-term vision for Gambian football. His tenure has focused on strengthening the team’s tactical identity, broadening the player pool, and building a squad capable of competing consistently against some of Africa’s strongest footballing nations.

The Scorpions now face an important period as preparations intensify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which are set to begin later this year. The Gambia will open its qualification campaign against Somalia in September, with hopes of securing another appearance at Africa’s premier football tournament.

McKinstry’s renewed mandate provides much-needed continuity and stability as the national team seeks to build on recent experiences and capitalize on the growing number of Gambian players making their mark across Europe and other international leagues.

With his future now secured, attention will turn to the upcoming qualification campaign, where McKinstry will be tasked with guiding the Scorpions toward another successful chapter in Gambian football history.
