Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlights that the use of the term “Fijian” remains open for national debate, following a submission linked to the Great Council of Chiefs proposing that it be reserved exclusively for iTaukei.

Speaking to the media, Rabuka clarified that the issue has been referred to a commission and is yet to be decided, stressing that it is a matter that requires wider discussion and consideration across the country.

“I think Fijian needs to be debated. I believe we’re all Fijians. We’re all Fijians” Rabuka highlighted.

Rabuka added that while cultural identity remains important, it should not divide the broader national identity, noting that the iTaukei identity can still be preserved alongside a shared sense of belonging.

“If I-taukei wants to have a I-taukei identity or label, to get the Fijian I-taukei or Fijian Indo-Fijian or what? I believe, it is one that belongs to all of us. It’s not a I-taukei word anyway” he added.
