Interlink Shipping has issued a public apology after passengers aboard its vessel Northern Star were forced to disembark by dinghy in rough seas at Ellington Jetty in Rakiraki this afternoon.

In a statement, the company said passengers travelling from Nabouwalu since 9am experienced hours of delays after the vessel was unable to berth upon arrival at 12pm.

“They were eventually forced to disembark via dinghy in rough seas after waiting onboard for hours,” the company said.

Interlink alleged that a Goundar Shipping vessel, Lomaiviti Princess 9 (LP9), had been occupying the jetty since March 28, blocking access for other operators.

The company also claimed repeated attempts to seek intervention from the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji were unsuccessful.

Interlink described the situation as a safety risk and alleged it breached provisions of the Maritime Transport Act governing the use of public jetties.

“This is not just about one company — it is about protecting the rights of passengers, ensuring safety at sea, and upholding the integrity of Fiji’s maritime industry,” the statement said.

Interlink said it remained committed to safe and reliable service while urging authorities to address the issue.
