Remembered as a loving, generous, and tightly knit family, the five victims of the Baulevu Road house fire are being mourned by a community struggling to come to terms with their sudden and tragic loss.
Just four days after celebrating his 56th birthday, Satish Chand perished alongside his loved ones when flames engulfed the home in the early hours of the morning.
The house belonged to his son, Shivam Singh, who is remembered as a devoted family man who worked tirelessly to provide a better life for those closest to him.
Neighbours said Singh was the kind of person who always put others before himself.
Only recently, he had purchased a car for his wife and had sacrificed $10,000 for his mother’s operation — acts that reflected his deep commitment and love for his family.
Those dreams and sacrifices were tragically reduced to ashes in a matter of hours.
Working as a tractor driver, Singh was described by co-worker Sailosi Junior as humble, hardworking, and caring.
He shared a close bond with his wife, 24-year-old Priya Lal, whom he married four years ago, and their three-year-old daughter, Akriti Singh — affectionately known in the neighbourhood as “Angel.”
Neighbour and close friend Aneesh Chandra says the family was warm, welcoming, and deeply connected to those around them and he recalled how they would see each other almost every day — a routine that was suddenly broken just before the tragedy.
Now, he says, the silence left behind is unbearable, as the community struggles to come to terms with the loss of a family that meant so much to so many.
The fire broke out shortly after midnight, trapping the family inside their home.
While efforts were made to save them, the flames spread too quickly.
Shivam Singh was rushed to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital with severe burns but later succumbed to his injuries, marking the end of a life defined by sacrifice, love, and dedication to family.
