Public consultations commenced yesterday for the proposed Waste-to-Energy facility in Vuda, as the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change advances its assessment under the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process.

The opening session took place in the chiefly village of Viseisei and was attended by the Tui Vuda, Ratu Eparama Tavaiqia, underscoring the role of traditional leadership in discussions affecting local communities.

Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Sivendra Michael, launched the consultation by explaining the EIA framework and the legal obligations tied to development approvals.

He highlighted that consultations are a mandatory part of the process, giving communities the opportunity to voice concerns, seek clarification, and contribute to decision-making at a national level.

Residents from Saweni and Vuda, along with business representatives, participated in the session to hear from project developers and raise key questions about the proposal.

The Ministry further clarified that written submissions and public consultations are conducted separately during the review period.

Written submissions enable individuals and organisations to formally present their views, while consultations provide a forum for direct dialogue with developers and government representatives.

The EIA report will remain open for public review until April 22, with officials confirming that all feedback gathered through both channels will be considered in the final decision.

Further consultations are scheduled to continue tomorrow at 7pm at the proposed project site in Naikorokoro.
