A high-speed police pursuit yesterday resulted in two officers being injured and three suspects taken into custody after authorities intercepted a vehicle carrying suspected illicit substances at the Laqere checkpoint.

Officers from a joint operations team had signalled for the vehicle to stop, but the driver failed to comply, triggering a chase towards the Tovata and Makoi areas.

The suspects later turned back towards Suva, where they attempted to break through the checkpoint and struck an officer in the process.

The pursuit ended just metres from the checkpoint following multiple collisions involving police vehicles and the suspects’ car.

An officer stationed at the checkpoint sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

Another officer, who was part of the pursuing team, received treatment at the Valelevu Health Centre.

All three suspects were also admitted to CWM under police guard, with authorities confirming that one had a prior criminal record.

A search of the vehicle uncovered white substances believed to be methamphetamine, along with tools suspected to be used in house break-ins.

Police stated that joint task force operations are continuing, warning that any attacks on officers will be dealt with firmly.
