SIMUNYE– Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Eswatini’s sugar industry into a key driver of industrialisation, regional integration and economic growth.
According to information from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade, the commitment was highlighted by Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade, Hon. Manqoba B. Khumalo, during his keynote address at the 2026 Standard Bank Regional Sugar Summit 2026 held at Simunye Country Club.
Sugar Industry Remains Strategic Sector
Addressing delegates, the Minister described the sugar industry as one of Eswatini’s most strategic economic sectors, noting that it continues to play a critical role in employment creation, export earnings and industrial development.
He said Government was actively working to secure expanded market access opportunities for local producers through regional and continental trade frameworks. These include negotiations within the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), the COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite Free Trade Area, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The Minister said these initiatives were aimed at opening new export markets while strengthening regional trade and investment cooperation.
Call for Greater Value Addition
The Minister further stressed the importance of Africa moving beyond the export of raw commodities and instead focusing on agro-processing and value addition.
He highlighted several emerging opportunities within the sugar value chain, including ethanol production, biofuels, pharmaceuticals, confectionery manufacturing, specialty sugars and sustainable packaging solutions.
According to the Minister, greater investment in these areas would not only diversify the economy but also create jobs, stimulate manufacturing growth and improve the competitiveness of African industries.
Government Supports Industrial Development
He also reaffirmed Government’s commitment to supporting industrial development through improved trade facilitation measures, investment in downstream industries, technology transfer and skills development.
In addition, the Minister pointed to the strategic importance of strengthening regional trade corridors such as the Durban Corridor and the Maputo Corridor to improve the movement of goods and enhance regional connectivity.
Industry Leaders Gather for Regional Discussions
The summit brought together Government officials, financial institutions, development partners, private sector stakeholders and industry leaders from across the region to discuss the future of the sugar industry and explore opportunities for sustainable industrial growth in Africa.
Delegates also exchanged ideas on strengthening regional cooperation, boosting investment and positioning Africa’s sugar sector for long-term competitiveness in global markets.
