Authorities arrested a Phnom Penh man for money laundering using Telegram.
The National Police’s Anti-Technology Crime Department, in coordination with the Phnom Penh Municipal Court’s deputy prosecutor, arrested the suspect for money laundering through technology via an investment fraud.
In early April this year, the department received a victim’s complaint that an anonymous group had cheated him into investing money through Telegram.
The victim made several transfers totalling $1,500, to the suspects’ bank account, after the promise of good returns on his investment.
However, after the money transfer, the victim did not receive any dividends, and the criminals kept on demanding more money.
On Thursday, based on the results of the department’s research and forensic examination, they arrested the suspect named “MKR,” who worked as a receiver and transferred money from the fraud, receiving a monthly salary.
The suspect confessed that he agreed to allow the criminal group to use his personal bank account as a money mule account.
However, the suspect only transferred $700 to the account in an attempt to defraud his criminal partners.
The department has filed a case and sent the suspect to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for legal action.
Meanwhile, the department is conducting an active investigation to arrest the suspected criminal leader and accomplices to bring them to justice.
