ASEAN Observer Team monitors situation at Boeung Trakuon Border Checkpoint

The Cambodian Liaison Group (CLG) today facilitated a field observation mission by the ASEAN Observer Team in Cambodia (AOT-KH) to monitor, verify and report on the situation along the Cambodia–Thailand border at Boeung Trakuon Border Checkpoint in Banteay Meanchey province, according to the Ministry of National Defence.

The mission took place at 8.45am in Kouk Romiet commune, Thma Puok district, to monitor developments along the border.

In a statement, the ministry alleged that Thai military forces had continued installing barbed wire, digging trenches and constructing new military bunkers in the area since the ceasefire took effect on December 27, last year.

The ministry also accused Thai forces of destroying infrastructure, homes and property belonging to Cambodian civilians, creating fear among local residents and continuing to occupy Cambodian territory in the area.

As a result, 7,873 Cambodian civilians from 1,869 families, including 1,847 children, remain unable to return to their homes, the ministry said.

Cambodia maintains that the international boundary between the two countries must be protected in accordance with the boundary established by the Indochina–Siam Boundary Commission and the principles of international law, including uti possidetis juris, which upholds inherited borders.

The ministry said Cambodia’s position is also based on the Franco–Siamese conventions and treaties, historical maps, official boundary-demarcation records and other relevant agreements and documents previously accepted by both sides.

The government and the ministry reaffirmed their commitment to fully implementing the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC), issued on December 27, and the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, signed on October 26, both last year, along with other relevant agreements.

The ministry said the commitment was aimed at supporting recovery, restoring normalcy and maintaining lasting peace and stability along the border.
