Cambodia has proposed a three-point roadmap to strengthen ASEAN-China media cooperation in the age of artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on ethical AI use, joint content production and inclusive opportunities for young media professionals.
Prak Thaveak Amida, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Information, outlined the priorities at the opening ceremony of the 8th ASEAN-China Media Week in Beihai, Guangxi, China, on October 19.
This year’s event, themed “AI Empowerment, Co-Creation and Shared Future”, features the inaugural ASEAN-China Micro Drama Contest and the 2026 ASEAN-China Young Hosts Camp to promote audiovisual cooperation, youth exchanges and regional media collaboration.
Representing Minister of Information Neth Pheaktra, Thaveak Amida said AI was transforming how audiovisual content was created, translated and shared, making professional and ethical responsibility essential.
“AI empowerment must be accompanied by professional and ethical responsibility,” he said, stressing that its use should remain “subject to human editorial oversight, careful verification and respect for intellectual property”.
He also called for stronger capacity to identify manipulated content and clearly label AI-generated material that could mislead audiences.
On joint content production, Thaveak Amida said, “co-creation should lead to programmes that our peoples can enjoy and learn from”.
He encouraged media organisations to cooperate in script development, translation and broadcasting to produce content that reflects local experiences and respects cultural diversity.
The third priority is ensuring that technological advances benefit all, including young professionals and broadcasters with limited resources.
“A shared future should offer opportunities for all,” he said, highlighting the Young Hosts Camp as a platform for skills development and lasting professional connections.
Thaveak Amida said the priorities aligned with the Royal Government’s Pentagonal Strategy – Phase I, particularly its focus on human capital and digital development. The Ministry of Information is working to modernise public broadcasting, strengthen professional skills and address misinformation.
He also highlighted Cambodia’s cooperation with China under the “Diamond Hexagon” framework, calling for expanded audiovisual exchanges, technical training and digital broadcasting cooperation.
“Cambodia stands ready to work with fellow ASEAN Member States and China to translate this year’s theme into practical activities,” he said.
Thaveak Amida also expressed hope that the ASEAN-China Micro Drama Contest Project Promotion Session on October 20 would help turn ideas into production and broadcasting partnerships, with clear arrangements for creators’ rights and wider audience access.
The event coincides with the fifth anniversary of the ASEAN-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, providing a platform to strengthen media cooperation and mutual understanding through shared content and professional exchanges.
