Cambodia, Oxfam International pledge to strengthen cooperation on environment and climate change

The Ministry of Environment and Oxfam International pledged to strengthen cooperation on environmental protection and climate change, a global challenge and a top priority for Cambodia.

The commitment was made during a meeting between Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth and Amitabh Behar, Executive Director of Oxfam International, on Tuesday.

During the meeting, Sophalleth said Cambodia had made strong commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, advance strategies to address climate change, and strengthen community resilience and promote sustainable livelihoods.

He emphasised that participation from all stakeholders, including government institutions, development partners and civil society organisations, was essential to achieving Cambodia’s sustainable development goals and carbon neutrality by 2050.

He also said Cambodia would renew its commitments at the upcoming 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31) in Turkey.

He stressed the importance of encouraging the international community to provide equitable climate financing, particularly for vulnerable countries, including developing nations and small island states, facing significant climate-related challenges.

Behar commended the ministry’s initiatives and campaigns promoting a clean, green and sustainable environment, as well as Cambodia’s efforts to address the global climate crisis.

He reaffirmed Oxfam’s continued support for the government through programmes to improve environmental and natural resource management and strengthen communities’ capacity to adapt to climate change.

Behar also highlighted the organisation’s cooperation with Cambodia and its global networks to seek transparent climate financing that can strengthen resilience and improve the sustainable livelihoods of local communities.

He reaffirmed Oxfam’s commitment to supporting Cambodia’s environmental strategies, ensuring that the initiatives respond to the population’s practical needs and improve the livelihoods of communities nationwide.
