Letters: Giving back to the community with a horse race? | Opinion

Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson is proposing to bring the Breeder’s Cup to New Orleans, and The Times-Picayune reports it would require $50 million to $100 million in upgrades to the Fair Grounds. It brings joy to my heart to see billionaires wanting to give back to the community by promoting sports that exploit animals. My only concern is that some of the money could be used in a more efficient manner, perhaps by spending another $20 million to again upgrade the lights on the Crescent City Connection to turn it into a giant disco ball.

Either way, I’m glad the state and the billionaire class are not focusing on our city’s broken streetlights, potholes, failing water system, electric infrastructure or underfunded police and schools. It’s enough for us serfs to see the wealthy and powerful enjoying themselves with tax dollars. That’s what Louisiana is all about!
